The Edmonton Cubs post their 12 wins against only 3 losses.

Nathan Wedgewood

In Senior Men’s AAA Baseball, Sunburst League action this evening, the Red Deer Riggers hosted the Edmonton Cubs at the Sylvan Lake Gulls Baseball stadium in Sylvain Lake Alberta.

Fresh off their 3rd loss of the season at the hands of the St Albert Tigers, the Cubs sent Nathan Wedgewood to the hill to put the Cubs back on track. This was his first start of the season after several outings in the closer role.

Wedgewood threw 6 complete innings allowing only 1 run in a 4-3 win over the Red Deer Riggers. Wedgewood was able to keep the Riggers off balance, for most of the game, scattering 6 hits in six innings with off-speed pitches and the occasional fastball.

Brenden Wuin came on in the bottom of the 7th to close it out for the Cubs with none out and bases loaded. With the help of a fantastic diving play in the center-right field gap by Dean Olson who laid out to make a stunning catch for the first out. After a base hit that scored the Riggers 3 run ( second of the inning), then a hard-hit line drive directly to shortstop Garrett Cyr who made the catch then flipped the ball to second base for the double play to end the game and preserve a 4-3 win.

The return match is scheduled for tonight August 4 at Re-max Field in Edmonton.
